Geography and context
Punta Loma is a coastal headland approximately 14 km from Puerto Madryn, on the southern shore of Golfo Nuevo in Chubut Province. The site is a provincial protected natural area recognised primarily for its stable colony of South American sea lions (Otaria flavescens).
The official Chubut tourism site (chubutpatagonia.gob.ar) lists Punta Loma explicitly as a site for snorkelling with sea lions and as part of Puerto Madryn’s diving offering. Land access to a viewpoint over the colony is possible; water access is by boat.
The Golfo Nuevo — on whose shore Punta Loma sits — is approximately 65 km long by 46 km wide with a 16 km mouth and maximum depths near 180 metres, and offers excellent underwater visibility.
What you’ll see
Sea lions are the defining feature of every dive at Punta Loma. South American sea lions (Otaria flavescens) — a species distributed along both Pacific and Atlantic coasts of South America, from Peru and Chile to Argentina and Uruguay — are highly curious underwater. Unlike their behaviour on land, where they largely ignore visitors, in the water they circle divers, inspect equipment and appear to initiate play. Interactions are unpredictable.
According to Wikipedia, the species lives in groups of approximately 15 individuals with a dominant male; during breeding season (December to January) males are more territorial and guide instructions should be followed closely.
The seabed combines rock, mussels, sea urchins, starfish and algae. Shallower restinga areas host a variety of benthic invertebrates. Visibility varies with daily conditions.
Snorkelling with sea lions is available without dive certification, per chubutpatagonia.gob.ar.
When to go
The recommended season runs November to April, when water is comparatively warmer and sea lions are most active. Diving continues outside this window with appropriate thermal protection. Trips depart early from Puerto Madryn port; the boat ride to the site takes approximately 25 minutes.
How to get there
Punta Loma is accessible from Puerto Madryn via Provincial Route 1, or by boat from the port. Dive operators include the boat ride in their packages. Puerto Madryn has its own airport and connections via National Route 3.
Protected areas and regulations
Punta Loma is a Chubut Provincial Protected Natural Area. Land access to the viewpoint is governed by low-tide scheduling (chubutpatagonia.gob.ar notes this condition). Diving and snorkelling operations require operators authorised by the Argentine Naval Prefecture.
Activities with wildlife follow Chubut provincial protected-area regulations, which prohibit deliberate contact with animals even when animals approach voluntarily.
Technical tips
Punta Loma is an active wildlife dive: maximum depth is around 15 m and sea lions set the pace of every immersion. The cold Golfo Nuevo water requires a semi-dry or 7 mm double wetsuit with hood — in winter a drysuit is advisable if available. Buoyancy control is critical: sea lions approach fast and often from below, and an uncontrolled diver can startle pups. During December–January pups are extremely curious while dominant males become more territorial; always follow guide instructions and avoid sudden movements. Visibility can actually improve in winter as summer particle loads diminish, partly compensating for the colder temperatures. The boat ride from Puerto Madryn takes approximately 25 minutes; bring warm clothes to wear over the wetsuit during transit.
