Geography and context
Tandil, in central-southeast Buenos Aires Province, is one of the few places in Argentina where you can dive a flooded granite quarry. Granite quarries differ from the limestone-clay (tosca) quarries of Greater Buenos Aires (Ezeiza, Pilar) in their better visibility: granite does not dissolve or release fines into suspension the way tosca does.
Diving takes place at the quarry known as La Sirena, run by local dive schools.
What you’ll see
The main attraction at the Tandil quarry is a 14-metre-long, 5-tonne Sabreliner aircraft sunk specifically for recreational diving. The plane was prepared before sinking, so divers can swim around and inside it.
Other submerged structures and objects round out the dive plan. The site is used for certifications, wreck specialty courses and check-out dives ahead of trips to coastal destinations.
Site conditions:
- Maximum depth: 12 metres
- Visibility: 4 to 8 metres (varies seasonally)
- Temperature: 8 to 20 °C depending on season
When to go
Most comfortable from November through March, with water between 15 and 20 °C. In winter temperature drops to 8 °C and a drysuit is advisable. Visibility is better when biological activity is lower, generally in late autumn and winter.
How to get there
Tandil is 360 km from Buenos Aires via Route 226. It is a well-established tourism town with broad lodging and dining options. The quarry is a few minutes from the city centre.
Access and regulations
The activity is run by authorised schools and operators with permitted access to the quarry. It is not an open-access site: entry is coordinated through the operator.
Technical tips
The vertical granite walls are comparable to marine wall diving — an unusual experience for a freshwater quarry. Visibility is exceptional for Buenos Aires Province and improves in autumn and winter (April–August), when it can reach 15 metres. The water stays cold even in summer (rarely above 18 °C), so a 7 mm wetsuit or semi-dry is recommended year-round. There are no services on site: bring all your own gear, including cylinder. Access is through private property; confirm availability with the operator before travelling, as the site may be closed during certain periods. Ideal for advanced training and buoyancy practice on walls.
